Sounds from the Street
It’s now November and whilst the year is winding down, temperatures are on the up and up. Sultry, sticky, humid and hazy are all overly apt adjectives. Coherent thoughts and eloquent sentences no longer come so easily.
It is as such that this month we stray from our usual textual format and opt instead for an audible rendition of the James St Journal. With the help of our community, we’ve put together a musical ode to the hot and sweaty season that is now upon us with a handful of the street’s retailers putting forth three songs that encapsulate the distinctive allure of summer.
Read each recommendation below before taking the full Sounds from the Street playlist for a spin here.
Matt Lapish – Cru Bar and Sixes and Sevens
1. Memory by SG Lewis
Nostalgic in the best way - it nods to mid-2010s French house and disco but feels fresh. It’s got that glossy, romantic energy that soundtracks road trips & arvo margy's.
2. All I Really Want by Yes Boone
I’m a sucker for a clever sample, and this one flips Mary J. Blige’s - Be Happy just right. It’s a touch more commercial than my usual picks, but it’s pure sunshine - makes you move if you like it or not.
3. Dancing Together by Edd
This one just lands. It’s simple, warm, and built for long afternoons that turn into nights. Pure feel-good fuel - currently getting a well-deserved rinse.
St Albans – Hellenika, SK Steak & Oyster, Sunshine and Sushi Room
1. Bamboléo by Gypsy Kings
This is really just the ultimate mood-lifter
2. Time of the Season by Zombies
Smooth, timeless and a little bit sultry
3. Move On Up by Curtis Mayfield
It’s impossible not to smile, sing along or at least tap a foot – basically bottled sunshine
Tom – P. Johnson
1. So Soldier by #1 Dads
This is like leaving the beach driving when sunsetting vibe
2. Kiss The Dirt (Falling Down the Mountain) by INXS
This would just have to be an Aussie banger for summer
3. Chicha Nola – Alternative Version by Gitkin
Need I say more?
Ty Simon – Biànca, LOS and sAme sAme
These tracks just feel good. They’re smooth, easy to play on repeat and made for long, warm nights with the right crowd and a cold drink.
1. Music Sounds Better with You by Neil Frances
2. Gamesofluck by Parcels
3. This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody) by Talking Heads
Bray – Camargue
When it comes to music for this time of year, my mind goes straight to these three dancey, fun, summer day bops.
1. Pick Up by DJ Koze
2. Pearl Pierce / Shinju No Pierce by Yumi Matsutoya
3. Mimosa 2000 by Furacão 2000
