In the Mood for Food
Ushering in Gemini season, crisp blue skies, and the annual crisis of ‘do I need a jumper?’, it’s officially June! But this change in month also signals the long-awaited (or highly dreaded) arrival of Winter.
If you’re anything like us, the colder weather mean that your appetite is through the roof. Because nothing sounds better on a wintry day than tucking into a warm plate of food. Lucky for all of us then, June on James St is serving up a myriad of delicious dining opportunities to keep you satiated throughout the month.
Keep reading to sink your teeth into the latest food news from our neck of the woods.
One Giant Step for Wine-kind
They may not be able to take you to the moon (yet!), but the street’s OG oenophiles Cru Bar will be transporting you to the heart of the Yarra Vallery with their upcoming Giant Steps Winemaker Dinner. Join Melanie Chester, General Manager and Head of Winemaking at Giant Steps, on Tuesday 10 June as she walks you through 11 different varieties of this award-winning winery’s finest Rosé, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir alongside a specially curated selection of dishes like Moreton Bay bug bisque and mandarin glazed confit duck.
Tickets are $180 per person and can be booked here.
Dinner and A Show
Live entertainment meets signature wood-fired flavours at ēmmē’s Lounge Session on Thursday 12 June. From 6PM, singer Cara Elyssa will be setting the mood with the dulcet tones of smooth jazz, accompanied by the soulful sounds of the saxophone brought to you by musician Harmony Jane. ēmmē will be offering their usual dinner menu for this sultry evening so you can enjoy your favourites or sample something new on your own accord.
Bookings are as normal with more information here.
Sunday Funday
If you ask neighbourhood cool kids Gerries, they’d say just because it’s Sunday, doesn’t mean you can’t have a bit of fun. Providing the fun in question is Spritz Sundays – a two-hour package of flowing spritzes and signature share-style eats for $79 per person. This weekend wine and dine is kicking off on Sunday 8 June so gather your friends and family and prepare to make Sunday the new Friday.

Sushi Back in Session
Have you had a spicy tuna crispy rice sized hole in your heart since Sushi Room closed its doors for renovation in early May? If so, then you’ll be please to know that the street’s go-to for immersive Japanese dining is now back to business. Expanding now for a second time, this new-look Sushi Room is both bigger and better with more seating, more food and drink items on the menu, and more ways to experience the restaurant thanks to a new, more relaxed alfresco dining area.
Bookings are back open here.
Come, Sit, Shawarma
Much like their Little James Street neighbour, Middle Eastern haunt The Green are also stepping Sunday’s up with their Shawarma Pop-up. From 12PM each Sunday, the team will be firing up the charcoal grill and setting a flavourful, spiced shawarma to spin. The result? Your choice of chicken or lamb roasted over the fire and served warm alongside fresh malfouf salad, traditional Lebanese pickles, crispy chips, and signature sauces for you to mix, match and wrap up in a fluffy house made pita.
Priced at $45 per person with booking available here.
