Love Thy Self
What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of February? You most certainly wouldn’t be alone if you said Valentine’s Day. The annual parade of red roses, chocolates re-packaged as limited edition, chintzy Hallmark cards, and clichéd rom-coms has long dominated the February zeitgeist.
Whilst the love stories highlighted during this time often focus on couples, the month of love is also a timely reminder to give the most important person in your life a little extra care. And that person is you.
Too often, in a culture that glorifies the grind, self-care takes a back seat. We treat burning the candle at both ends as a badge of honour, and somehow putting ourselves first becomes the exception rather than the norm. But research tells us that the opposite is true: people who engage in regular acts of self-care report significantly lower stress levels, better emotional regulation, and a greater sense of overall wellbeing.
With that in mind, this month’s edition of the James St Journal is dedicated to helping you slow down, reset, and show yourself a little extra love.
Walk + Window Shop
We know the most obvious self-care tip is to ‘just go for a walk’ but hear us out. With around 1.5 kilometres of tree-lined streets to explore, the James St neighbourhood makes it easy to turn a casual stroll into a feel-good ritual. Browse the creatively curious displays of Calexico, CAMILLA, Maryon’s, and M.O.S.T, satisfy your shopping itch, and get your steps in while you’re at it. Consider it feeding two birds with one scone.
Try Something New
Self-care doesn’t always have to be serious. Sometimes it’s as simple as shaking up your routine with something playful and unexpected. At Allpress’ newest Robertson Street outpost, the menu goes far beyond your standard flat white. Think Coconut Cold Brew, Strawberry Matcha Clouds, Peach Iced Tea, and inventive seasonal specials that make an ordinary coffee run feel like a mini adventure.
Create a Calmer Corner
There’s a particular kind of comfort that comes from loving the space you live in. Whether it’s a beautifully soft throw, a new lamp that changes the mood of a room, or a statement piece you’ve been eyeing off for months, RJ Living is full of thoughtful finds that turn a house into a home.
Find a Slow Moment via Skincare
In a world of rushed routines, taking proper care of your skin can feel like a radical act of self-respect. RATIONALE offers tailored treatments and consultations designed to help you reset, restore, and glow with confidence.
Boost Your Brows
Never underestimate the subtle power of feeling put-together. Whether it’s a brow shape, tint, or a full refresh, Amy Jean Brow Agency specialises in those subtle enhancements that make everyday life feel a little more polished.
Sniff Out Your Self-Care
Choosing a fragrance is one of the most personal forms of self-care, and at Le Labo it’s an experience designed to be savoured. Instead of committing to a single scent, spend an afternoon sampling your way through the collection – smoky, fresh, floral, warm – and see what speaks to you. Better yet, create your own custom discovery set to take home and trial at your own pace.
