Summer of Love
What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear ‘Summer of Love’? Is it flower power, long hair, and tie-dye as far as the eye can see? Or maybe it’s a summer fling, a carefree romance epitomising freedom yet spanning just a few months? But what it might not be is an appreciation of the little things so unique to summer.
With it now being the month of love, it seems only fitting that this February edition of the James St Journal serve as our community’s love letter to summer - a celebration of the small joys and habits that make the season special through the eyes of the street’s retailers.
ANNIE AT CRU CELLAR
To combat the hot heat of summer, Annie from Cru Cellar turns her attention to the icy cold. That is, more specifically, icy cold beverages. Champagne, Rosé, Riesling, frozen margaritas, if it can be consumed close to freezing, you can guarantee it’s on high rotation. Annie’s tip for taking your summer sipping to the next level are the Asahi 135mL mini cans that stay cold right the way through because there’s nothing worse that finishing your beer on a warm sip.
GINA AT KING ARTHUR CAFÉ
Much like Annie, hospitality extraordinaire King Arthur Café, Gina also seeks a little liquid courage to get her through sweltering summers. Only this time courage come from caffeine and the liquid takes the form of a Citrus Espresso Twist. This zingy pick-me-up melds the boldness of coffee with the effervescence of tonic and sweetness of orange for a caffeinated refresher that’s sure to put a pep in your step.
LARA AT MARYON’S
In the words of Maryon’s Shoes very own, Lara:
“Summer to me is water: beach, pool, the trusty water bottle in hand, topped off with a 24/7 glow of perspiration. With that in mind I like to keep my summer style light and effortless and focus on adding playful and practical elements through my accessories. Currently on high rotation are my Chloe slides; I love that they look at home walking down James St as well as by the beach and my (much loved) Loewe Sunglasses that offer the most insane protection (sun, magpies, frisbees, you name it...they've got).”
LAUREN AT RATIONALE
Just like the vast majority of us, summer for RATIONALE’s Senior Flagship Manager, Lauren, means one thing: sun. Sunshine, sun showers, and most importantly, sunscreen. Because what summer shouldn’t mean is sun damage. Knowing a thing or two about good skin care helps Lauren keep herself sun safe, with #3 The Enriched Crème SPF15 and #3 The Tinted Serum SPF50+ being her go-tos when comes it to her slip, slop, slap routine.
SALLY AT SIR.
When those warmer days start to roll around, the first thing on Sally from SIR.’s mind is all that extra daylight. Not one to let it go to waste, her favourite way to make the most of longer days is, very aptly, with a long lunch. Wining, dining and socialising well into evening, for Sally, the long lunch epitomises the carefree spirit of summer. Really lean into the seasonal occasion with some printed linen or your brightest coloured outfit and you’ll be groovy baby.
SOLVEIG AT THE NUT MARKET
Sally isn’t alone in their appreciation of the extra hours of daylight. For being out and about forms the foundation of The Nut Market’s Solveig self-proclaimed ‘Hot Girl Summer’. Be it catching up with her fellow retail friends over coffees, impromptu run ins with her favourite regulars, or her strutting her way through the street on one of her hot girl walks, Solveig sees summer on James St as defined by socialising and imbued with a sense of community.
