It’s technically still winter but the food scene on James St is heating up. Read all about it below.
BISTRO TINO CLOCKS ON FOR APERI-TINO
Bistro Tino is dipping its toe into evening hours with an aperitivo session on Friday 7 August from 3PM to 6PM. Expect spritzes, lager and a compact bar menu of oysters, focaccia, pan con tomate, raw yellowfin tuna, charcuterie, olives and cannoli, marking a first taste of Tino beyond daytime service.
VOTE 1 GELATO MESSINA
Gelato Messina is handing some of the flavour decisions over to the people, with customers now able to vote for the specials they want to see return. The top two from each monthly voting cycle will make a comeback, including contenders like the newest special Bertha Loves Mertha.
Created to celebrate Messina’s collaboration with UK-based cake company, Get Baked, this extra special special features a Milo crumble, chocolate ganache and pieces of Bertha cake throughout.
Voting resets on the first Tuesday of each month, with the July–August winners set to return in October.
HARVEYS SERVES UP EKKA SEASON
Harveys is putting Queensland produce on the plate from Saturday 8 August to Sunday 16 August with a steak frites special featuring Kidman Premium Stockyard Wagyu 4+ scored sirloin, horseradish butter, jus, haricots verts and seeded mustard. It comes with a glass of Mont-Redon Grenache and is available until sold out.
HELLENIKA HEADS TO NAOUSA
Hellenika’s winter banquet series reaches its final stop in Naousa, the northern Greek wine region known for its native Xinomavro grape. The $65 menu pairs dips and warm pita with chargrilled lamb ribs, Greek salad, chicken souvlaki, peas with potato and dill, and a Metaxa-laced chocolate biscuit dessert, with Kir-Yianni wines available alongside.
Available for dinner only, Monday to Thursday until the end of August.
JOCELYN’S PROVISIONS GOES STRAWBERRY MAD
Jocelyn’s Provisions is leaning all the way into EKKA season with a trio of strawberry specials: a galette created with chef and cooking creator Danielle Alvarez, a strawberry cream slab cake and strawberry shortbread. Call it a very Brisbane excuse to eat your fruit in pastry form, available Tuesday 11 August and again from Friday 14 to Sunday 16 August.
PENELOPE TAKES TO THE LOUNGE
Penelope is making room for a more relaxed start to the evening with Lounge Hour, pairing a select cocktail with golden fries for just $20. It runs Wednesday and Thursday from 5PM to 6PM, and Friday to Sunday from 3PM to 6PM.
THE GREEN GIVES EKKA A MIDDLE EASTERN SPIN
Show Day gets a Middle Eastern remix on Tuesday 12 August, with two one-day-only specials joining the menu. Za’atar fried chicken takes care of the savoury side, while strawberry shortcake brings the familiar Ekka sweetness to the table. It is a small nod to the season, filtered through The Green’s own flavour language, with bookings open now.
