20 Years in the Making

Calile Culture: An Evening with Ben Quilty

For critically acclaimed Australian artist, Ben Quilty, there is quite literally nothing that is off limits. War time violence, gory guts and eyeballs, harsh truths and unflinching commentary on difficult social issues are all commonplace in Quilty’s works.

But whilst many dedicated to challenging the status quo remain in this realm of grit and darkness, Quilty embraces the duality of life. Childlike wonder, joyous whimsy and blurred realities are equally as present in his exploration of the hidden psychologies of people and places, connections to the land and untouchable, buried truths.

It is with this holistic thinking and a fierce moral compass that Quilty has produced a portfolio steeped in emotion and vulnerability. Now spanning over two decades, this deeply personal and intimate collection is the focus his upcoming solo exhibition, ‘Ben Quilty: 20 Years’, at Jan Murphy Gallery opening on 19 November until 7 December 2024.

Join Quilty in conversation with the National Gallery of Australia’s Director Nick Mitzevich at The Calile in collaboration with Jan Murphy Gallery on Friday 22 November for an evening of dining and compelling conversation delving into the past 20 years of Quilty’s works.
