Dinosaur Designs
Louise Olsen and Stephen Ormandy are artists, designers, creative directors and co- founders of Dinosaur Designs, which they established in 1985 out of a shared love of art, design and friendship. Curiosity and imagination are central to their work and fuel a sense of play that blurs boundaries to create a philosophy of colour, form and texture. They wish to share that philosophy and enrich people’s lives through the pieces they create.
Their resin pieces are made by hand in their Sydney studio, it’s at the heart of what Olsen and Ormandy do. Resin is a special material with a wonderful nature of its own; a viscous fluidity that allows them to cross the boundaries of sculpture and painting to create pieces, which they think of as visual poetry. Each bowl, vessel and piece of jewellery is a 3D poem that can be read by touch. So much is discovered during the process of creating each new piece that experimentation and innovation are constant.
Olsen and Ormandy design in many materials, including metal and glass, with each piece being made by skilled artisans. Sometimes the best artisans live outside Australia, such as our wonderful coppersmiths and brass craftsmen.
Working in design is a wonderful privilege for Olsen and Ormandy and a great way to study the world. It's a never-ending exploration where they’re constantly inspired by nature. This is just one of the reasons why sustainable working methods are in place and actively work to reduce their environmental footprint by minimising water usage, electricity consumption and recycling wherever possible.
Olsen and Ormandy play active part in their community by supporting organisations and people who make the world a beautiful place through the arts, who help those less fortunate than ourselves, or who protect and care for our endangered natural habitats.
Over three decades Olsen and Ormandy have built it in to what is arguably one of Australia’s most recognised design companies. Their work has been shown at the Victoria & Albert museum, London Design Festival, Art15 London, Tokyo’s Designer’s Block, Guggenheim, Jack Boffo House- New York, Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art, Sydney’s Centre for Australian Design, Powerhouse Museum and Melbourne’s Karen Woodbury Gallery. Their first book ‘The Art of Dinosaur Designs’ was published in October 2016. Steve is also a public speaker on issues relating to art and design and exhibits paintings through Sydney’s Olsen Irwin Gallery. Louise also sits on various judging panels including Veuve Clicquot’s New Generation Award and the InStyle Australia and Audi Women of Style Award. Olsen and Ormandy have also collaborated with international design houses Louis Vuitton and Paul Smith.
